News and expected price (free), release date, features and other rumors

Android 15 will be released next year, following Android 14 this fall. Because it’s so early in the development cycle, we don’t know much, but here’s what we know, along with what some people think will be included.

    Android 15 release date

Android 14 is the next Android OS update, so Android 15 (code name is Vanilla Ice Cream) will not arrive until Next year. Watch for an official mention at Google I/O 2024.

Like all Android versions, Android 15 will be available through the Android Beta program once Google makes the announcement. The update will be generally available at a later date, and you’ll get a notification to download Android 15 if your phone supports it.

    Estimated release date of Lifewire

We expect Android 15 to launch in late 2024, probably sometime between August and October.

    Features of Android 15

Our Android 14 article lists all the features expected in that version. Most, if not all, mentioned there will move to Android 15. Some important ideas include custom lock screen shortcuts, more private screen recording, and app cloning.

Since Android 14 is still in development, it makes sense that we don’t have much to say about the new features that will come in Android 15. Typical changes like performance improvements, user interface, and Privacy tweaks are expected as usual.

One rumor we’ve seen, reported by Android researcher Mishaal Rahman, is that Android 15 will separate NFC from system updates. The idea is to increase the speed at which Google can fix issues related to the NFC stack, allowing these updates to be pushed through the Play Store.

If rumors of a Google AirTag alternative are true, Android 15 could introduce the software needed to find tracking devices. It’s unclear when or if that tracker will be released, but it wasn’t mentioned at Google I/O 2023, so we could see it launch next year around the same time as Android 15.

Many changes could happen between now and Android 15 is released, so anything sounds plausible, like this idea for an Android 15 notification panel.

Of course, we’ll know more once the full 2023 update arrives. Check back for updates!
