CORTLAND COUNTY, NY (WIVT/WBGH) – The Cortland County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a new tech scam that is occurring in the area.
Victims are receiving a pop-up message on their computer screen or via email warning that there is a “detected threat” on the device. The pop-up will have a phone number with instructions to call the tech line for support. When making a call, the “security technician” will request payment for the service via a gift card.
The sheriff’s office advises people not to call the numbers listed and emphasizes that real security alerts will never require you to call a number for assistance.
If you think there might be a problem with your computer, update your computer’s security software and run a scan.
Officials are asking anyone with information regarding any similar incidents to contact the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office at (607) 758-5599.
