Microsoft on Tuesday said it began releasing the first major update to Windows 11, the current version of the PC operating system. Installing a free update can make your PC easier to access, more convenient, more secure — and possibly even more eco-friendly.
Over the past decade, Microsoft has diversified its business away from Windows by developing the Azure public cloud and acquiring assets like the business social network LinkedIn, but Windows still generates 12% of revenue. of the company.
Updates help Microsoft show that it’s not giving up on modernizing Windows, which has been around since the 1980s and is more popular than any other operating system for personal computers. But the company only delivers a sizable update to Windows each year, compared with two updates a year for Windows 10, the predecessor to Windows 11.
Panos Panay, Microsoft product manager, wrote in a blog post about the changes: “Our work has never been done to make sure Windows evolves and adapts to you.
Among Windows versions, Windows 10 remains the most popular, with around 72% market share, according to data collected by StatCounter. Support for that operating system will end in 2025, and many businesses are still relying on it for their PC fleets. But Windows 11, originally released in October 2021, is growing in popularity, with a 13% market share in August, up from 2.6% in January.
The Windows 11 2022 update, as the new version is called, comes with a video editing program, new customization options for the Start menu, and access to additional Android apps. Here are some of the biggest changes:
Start menu changes. People have been able to pin apps to the Start menu, which now appears in the center of the screen. An app folder in that Start menu can now be created by dragging one app icon on top of another. In addition, the density of the application grid in the Start menu may change. In the Start section of the Settings app, you can click the button that says “Add Pin”. Alternatively, you can click “More suggestions” to see additional suggested files in the Start menu.
A new way to organize windows. Windows 11 comes with a way to arrange windows neatly on your desktop. The new update goes further. Instead of hovering over a window’s maximize button to see what Microsoft calls a Snap Layout option, you’ll be able to drag the window to the top of the screen and then drop it into the area where it appears on the screen. You can then place additional windows in other areas. This feature now works with touch screens.
New video editing app. A year ago, Microsoft acquired Clipchamp, a startup building video editing apps. It is now pre-installed in Windows. The free version will allow you to rotate and crop videos, apply a set of filters, draw on existing images and videos, and create an export without watermark.
Clipchamp video editing application now comes with Windows.
Microsoft
Energy saving. Windows Update, the tool for downloading and installing operating system updates, can schedule updates to be installed when local utilities are relying on energy sources that produce lower emissions . To use this feature, your PC must be plugged in, turned on, and connected to the internet, and must have information on carbon intensity in your area. Microsoft says it has also updated the default power settings for “Sleep” and “Screen Off” which will reduce emissions when the PC is doing nothing.
Extend Android app access. One of the most notable features of Windows 11 is the ability to run Android apps, thanks to the Amazon Appstore. Microsoft is now present in 31 countries with over 20,000 Android apps. The company is promising improved graphics performance for Android apps.
Don’t open that app! A feature called Smart App Control can automatically prevent you from opening an unsafe app or file. You can turn the feature off, but Microsoft doesn’t recommend it, and you won’t be able to turn it back on without reinstalling Windows.
Microsoft’s Windows 11 can now block unsafe files and apps.
Microsoft
Better graphics for older games. The graphics boost will also be visible for games that are based on the older DirectX 10 or DirectX 11 application programming interfaces and do not run in full screen mode. This includes variable refresh rates, which can result in more new images being displayed every second for devices with higher refresh rates.
Better video calls with advanced PC. Some new PCs come with artificial intelligence chips onboard, and if you have one of those, Windows 11 will be able to cancel out background noise during video calls, letting the camera track you as you move. Switch during the call and change your video feed so it looks like you’re making eye contact with others during your calls.
If you have a compatible PC, Windows 11 can make it look like you’re making eye contact during video calls.
Microsoft
Better search. When you search for apps and settings in the taskbar search box, the results are displayed faster and more accurately.
Close annotation everything. People are increasingly turning on closed captions when they watch videos, and a new accessibility feature in Windows called Live Captions makes this possible for audio or video in any application.
Windows 11 can provide subtitles for video and audio.
Microsoft
Commands. Another accessibility feature, Voice Access, gives you a way to control your PC with your voice. Sometimes that can be an easier way to navigate than typing on a keyboard or clicking a mouse.
More voice options. Not everyone likes the sound of voices reading text on screen in the Windows Narrator accessibility feature, so now Microsoft is offering three artificial intelligence-based, natural-sounding voices.
How to get Windows 11 2022 update
Those running Windows 11 can install the new update by opening the Settings app, navigating to Windows Update, and clicking the button that says “Check for updates.” Windows 10 users can see if their PC can run Windows 11 using the Check PC Health app and Windows Update will let them know if they’re eligible to upgrade to Windows Updates 11 2022 aka Windows 11, 22H2 version or not.
Not all Windows features that early adopters have access to through the Microsoft Windows Insider Program will be available immediately. The ability to view multiple folders as tabs in File Explorer, a feature that appears on Apple MacOS in 2013, coming in October.
