Apple iPhone Event Preview – iPhone 13, iPad, AirPods and Watch

Apple will hold its annual iPhone event on Tuesday, the company’s seventh consecutive virtual launch due to the pandemic.

According to analysts, the company is expected to introduce new iPhones and updates for AirPods and Apple Watch.

Apple’s hyped fall launches are a hallmark of the company. They attracted worldwide media attention, millions of viewers on YouTube and the Apple website, and set the stage for a holiday marketing campaign when Apple sales were at their peak.

All of Apple’s product segments are down this year as people work from home. Last quarter, iPhone sales grew 50% year-over-year, while Mac and iPad sales grew 16% and 12% year-over-year, respectively. The “other products” business, which includes devices like watches and AirPods, grew 40% year-over-year. Apple could continue the momentum with a flurry of new products ahead of the holiday season.

Last year, due to Covid, Apple unveiled its new watch in September and then the iPhone 12 event in October. The iPhone 12 introduced a completely new design and 5G.

New iPad laptops and MacBooks Pro will also be updated this fall. It’s unclear if Apple will gather all of its fall launches into one release event, or if it’s scattering them all out.

Here’s what Apple could launch on Tuesday.

    Iphone

Apple’s most important product is the iPhone, which accounts for half of Apple’s 2020 sales. Until last year, the company announced new models in September every year since 2012.

Last October, Apple released four iPhone models: the iPhone 12 mini is less than $599, the iPhone 12 is $829, the high-end iPhone 12 Pro is more than $999, and the iPhone 12 Pro Max is $1,099. All iPhone 12s have 5G connectivity and a new, more square design.

It is expected that this year’s lineup will be similar to last year’s with the same screen size and price. Research from TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, a top Apple analyst, suggests that the big change this year could be a smaller notch at the top of the iPhone display, which houses the identification camera. device face. The size of the notch has remained the same since it was introduced in 2017.

According to Kuo, the new iPhone could also have a larger battery and be a bit heavier thanks to a space-saving design inside. In previous years, new iPhones have come with camera and processor upgrades, and that will almost certainly happen this year, according to Kuo.

We still don’t know what Apple will call the new iPhones. Apple has named a number of previous devices “S” devices signifying the major internal changes, in line with this year’s expectations. That means it could be called the iPhone 12s, or it could be named the iPhone 13 if Apple decides the changes are enough to warrant it. We don’t know yet.

    Apple Watch

Apple has released new Apple Watch models every September since 2016. It’s a key product in Apple’s wearables business, accounting for 11% of Apple’s 2020 sales.

Last year, Apple introduced the high-end Series 6 and the mid-range Apple Watch SE. This year’s high-end Apple Watch could be called the Apple Watch Series 7. Last year Kuo predicted that the 2021 models would be a “significant design change in form.”

According to Bloomberg News, this design will also include a slight increase in screen size, which equates to 16% of the pixels on the watch’s display. Bloomberg says Apple will introduce new watch faces to take advantage of the larger screen, including one that allows users to view all 24 time zones at once.

Some Apple Watch models may be out of stock due to manufacturing issues. Nikkei Asia reported this month that Apple delayed production because of assembly challenges. The report also suggests that Apple could add a blood pressure sensor this year, but The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg have said the feature won’t appear this year. Apple declined to comment on the production of the Watch.

In previous years, when Apple had problems making millions of devices before launch, it delayed the release date by weeks or months after the rollout. For example, in 2017, they announced the iPhone X in September, but it didn’t ship until November.

    AirPods

AirPods are a key component of Apple’s wearables business, accounting for more than $30 billion in annual revenue in 2020, up 25% from 2019.

While the product has become increasingly important to Apple, the company hasn’t launched new AirPods since October 2019 when it introduced the higher-end AirPods Pro with a new design and noise cancellation. The most recent $159 regular AirPods, without noise cancellation, were announced in March 2019.

In a note to investors over the weekend, Kuo said Apple will launch new AirPods 3. He said Apple could continue to sell existing AirPods at lower prices. According to Bloomberg, the redesign will likely make the AirPods look more like AirPods Pro, with a wider case and shorter body.

    iPad

If Apple announced a new iPad, it would underscore how important the product is to the company as the Covid-19 pandemic forces people to work and learn from home, boosting sales of computers.

For the first three quarters of Apple’s fiscal 2021, the company reported $23.6 billion in iPad revenue, up more than 39 percent from last year.

Apple last updated the iPad Air, a mid-range option, with an edge-to-edge display in September 2020. Apple also updated the chip in its cheapest iPad, a $329 tablet it calls simply iPad, at the same event. They will be refreshed this fall, though it’s unclear if that will happen on Tuesday or at the second event. But the iPad Mini, last refreshed in March 2019, is long overdue for a refresh.

According to Bloomberg, the iPad Mini could be redesigned later this year to look more like its siblings. The report says it will not have a home button and will have a more square design like Apple’s iPad Air and Pro. That means it can have a fingerprint reader in the power button like the iPad Air or Face ID like the iPad Pro.

    Everything else

Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, speaks during an Apple Event on April 20, 2021.

This is a product event, so don’t expect any comment from Tim Cook on recent controversies including plans to scan videos uploaded to iCloud for illegal material, mixed decision recently in the Epic Games App Store lawsuit, or reflect on the company’s decision to delay returning to the office until next year.

However, Apple sometimes uses its iPhone launch to highlight non-product projects, such as its drive to become carbon-neutral in its supply chain over the next 10 years.

If Apple talks about its climate efforts, expect VP Lisa Jackson to speak to the audience. Past events have also included musical guests or celebrity appearances.

Apple sometimes releases new services at launch in the fall, such as Apple One, a subscription service plan, starting last year. But the big iOS update is announced in June, at the company’s developer conference, and is usually released to everyone in the fall.

There is another wildcard. Apple’s largest, fastest MacBook Pro laptop, the 16-inch model, hasn’t been updated since November 2019 and still uses Intel processors even as the company switches to its own chips in laptop and desktop computers.

However, in the past decade, Apple has not launched a new Mac computer at the same event as the new iPhone. There could be a separate event in October or November if new Macs are in the pipeline for a fall release.
